When I set out to visit this temple, I prepared for a day under the scorching sun with few expectations. Located in the Gangnam district, amidst luxury boutiques and the Olympic Park, other attractions are predominantly malls. Armed with my backpack, I ventured forth. And what a PLEASANT SURPRISE it was.
Bongeunsa Temple is stunning—a true sanctuary in the heart of the bustling city. Nestled in Gangnam, this Buddhist temple offers a unique spiritual experience blending tradition with modernity. From the moment I arrived, I was completely captivated and delighted to be there.
Tranquility amidst Gangnam
From outside, Bongeunsa Temple may seem like a simple building easily overlooked. However, once you pass through the entrance, a completely different world unfolds. The temple complex consists of multiple pavilions and small temples, each dedicated to prayer and meditation.
The wooden structures adorned with delicate paintings tell stories of ancient times and traditions. Despite their age, the pavilions have been modernized for comfort with mosquito nets, a touch of modernity that contrasts pleasantly with the authenticity of the place.
What struck me the most was the feeling that the temple never ends. As I wandered, I discovered new pavilions, each with its own charm and history. The layout of the buildings on the hill creates a sense of infinity, as if every step leads to a new discovery.
For nature enthusiasts, there is a trail that circles the temple, offering a peaceful walk through greenery dotted with small temples.
Each pavilion houses halls where one can meditate or pray in tranquility. The chants of the monks resonate through the air, and I loved it. So soothing. Just perfect. I spent time sitting in front of many pavilions, listening to the chants through sliding doors made of paper or wood.
The standing Buddha statue
At the back of the temple, an imposing statue of Buddha stands proudly. It’s clearly the highlight of the visit. This standing statue is surrounded by hundreds of miniature Buddha statues arranged in a semi-circle. The library surrounding it adds an air of erudition to this majestic setting. I loved that too.
Since I visited in May, during Buddha’s birthday month, there were hundreds of lanterns forming a parasol, their colors reflecting on the statues. Simply magnificent.
Conclusion
My visit to Bongeunsa Temple was unforgettable. This sanctuary, amidst the hustle and bustle of Seoul, offers a welcome respite—a moment of tranquility and reflection. The monk chants, majestic statues, and historical pavilions create an atmosphere imbued with spirituality and peace.
