As I embarked on my journey to the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, nestled along the picturesque coast of Busan, I didn’t yet realize that I was about to embark on a serene adventure filled with history, spirituality, and breathtaking ocean views.

Monday morning, off I went to visit the temple despite all the work I had. But hey, it would have been a shame to miss out on this beautiful sunshine, so I figured I’d work in the afternoon and evening… There you go!

The journey: An odyssey of serenity

The journey from downtown Busan to the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple was an adventure in itself, taking just over an hour with transfers between the subway, train, and bus. Despite the multiple modes of transportation, time passed quickly, especially upon arriving at the temple, greeted by the invigorating scent of the sea.

Arrival and first impressions

Wow, that’s my first and last thought.

The sun was shining brightly, and this temple, my friends, incredible.

We start with an alley lined with zodiac statues, and it immediately sets the mood.

And then we go further down, and there we are!

For those wondering if the journey to the temple is worth it, the answer is unequivocally yes. Everywhere you look, there are panoramic views of the sea and the temple, offering plenty of photography opportunities.

The temple gardens are imbued with the spirit of giving, with donation boxes scattered around for visitors to contribute and even have their messages inscribed on the temple roof tiles. You can buy bags of rice, write a message on a temple roof tile, and of course, buy plenty of other common offerings like gold leaves or candles.

An inner journey: Discovering the temple’s treasures

Venturing further into the temple, I encountered imposing statues, and of course, a very big Buddha who has eaten well…

As I climbed the stone staircase, I admired the complex details of the temple’s architecture, each step bringing me closer to a deeper understanding of its meaning.

And I absolutely loved the mini Buddha statues placed here and there all around in the rocks, foliage, etc… Some of them are particularly amusing.

Tips for an optimal visit: Timing is key

For those planning a visit, I highly recommend arriving before 10 a.m. to avoid the crowd. My morning excursion allowed me to discover the temple in a peaceful atmosphere before the massive influx of tourists.

The Haedong Yonggungsa Temple remains a beacon of tranquility and spirituality. Whether you seek solitude, enlightenment, or simply a moment of respite, this seaside sanctuary offers a journey of discovery. So, if you find yourself in Busan, don’t miss the opportunity to undertake this unforgettable adventure, and before leaving the temple, don’t forget to toss a coin into the fountain while making a wish!
